A flange adapter is a critical pipeline accessory for resolving connection mismatches between pipes of different specifications, pressure ratings, or standards. Its core technical principles integrate adaptive connection, sealing, force transmission, and material matching, ensuring stable, leak-free heterogeneous pipeline connections while meeting system pressure and temperature requirements.
I. Core Adaptive Connection Principle
Its primary design goal is to bridge connection gaps. For different nominal diameters, it adopts a reducing structure with two ends matching the connected pipes, and the internal flow channel transitions smoothly to reduce resistance. For different flange standards, the flange dimensions are precisely processed to ensure bolt alignment. Wall thickness and bolt configuration are designed based on the system’s maximum pressure rating to guarantee pressure-bearing capacity.
II. Sealing Mechanism: Compression Sealing & Structural Optimization
Sealing relies on gasket compression and structural optimization. A gasket between the adapter and pipeline flanges deforms elastically or plastically under bolt preload, filling micro-gaps on sealing surfaces to block leakage. Gasket materials are matched to media and temperature. Sealing surfaces enhance performance: raised faces increase contact pressure, while tongue-and-groove structures prevent gasket extrusion under high pressure.
III. Force Transmission: Ensuring Structural Stability
During operation, the adapter bears medium internal pressure and bolt preload. Its body thickness resists radial expansion from internal pressure to avoid sealing surface damage. Bolt preload balances the flange separation force caused by internal pressure; bolt quantity and diameter are calculated to maintain a tight flange fit, preventing seal failure from separation.
IV. Material Matching Principle
Material selection follows medium and environmental compatibility: carbon steel for general non-corrosive media with high strength and low cost; 304/316 stainless steel for corrosive media; alloy steel for high-temperature/pressure conditions with excellent high-temperature strength.
In conclusion, flange adapters realize reliable heterogeneous pipeline connections through precise structural design and parameter matching. Selection must align with pipeline diameter, pressure rating, media properties, and standards to ensure system safety.
